Who Are We?
BriefCatch is the leading legal writing software trusted by top litigators, judges, and legal teams across the country. Our platform helps legal professionals write with greater clarity, precision, and persuasive force. We’re a small, senior team building software where quality and precision genuinely matter, and we’re looking for engineers who care about the same things
The Role
We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to own meaningful parts of the product end-to-end. You’ll work across the full stack, from the document-centric UI our users live in to the backend services and AI-powered flows that drive the core BriefCatch experience. This is a high-ownership role: you’ll shape technical direction alongside a small group of senior engineers, set the bar for code quality and engineering practices, and have real influence over how we build as we scale.
What you'll do?
- Design, build, and operate the core backend services and data pipelines that power BriefCatch’s legal document intelligence platform.
- Drive measurable improvements in system reliability, performance, throughput, observability, and security — especially for document processing and AI inference workloads.
- Architect and run cloud-native infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure) with strong Kubernetes expertise, including high-concurrency patterns, autoscaling, and workload isolation.
- Build and mature CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform/Ansible), and automation that lets the team ship fast without sacrificing stability.
- implement production-grade monitoring, tracing, alerting, and incident response; lead post-mortems and turn learnings into platform improvements.
- Optimize for document-heavy, high-throughput workloads: tune CPU/memory/I/O, database performance, caching layers, and cost efficiency.
- Partner with AI engineers, legal domain experts, and product to deliver infrastructure that meets the reliability and compliance bar of top law firms and courts.
- Mentor engineers, raise the bar on operational excellence, and help shape a platform that lawyers and judges can trust.
What We're Looking For
- 5–8 years of hands-on experience in systems engineering, SRE, platform engineering, or building production backend/infrastructure systems at scale.
- Proven ability to design and operate highly available, high-throughput systems that process complex documents or similar data-intensive workloads.
- Strong, current experience with Kubernetes (networking, autoscaling, isolation, affinity), at least one major cloud provider, Docker, and Linux internals.
- Proficiency in Python or Go for tooling and automation; solid understanding of distributed systems, databases, and high-concurrency patterns.
- Experience with observability (Prometheus/Grafana/OpenTelemetry), structured logging, IaC, and modern SRE/DevOps practices.
- Excellent debugging, root-cause analysis, and communication skills; comfortable owning outcomes in a fast-moving environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience in legal tech, document processing pipelines, or other regulated/high-stakes data domains.
- Background with AI/ML infrastructure, vector databases, or LLM inference serving at production scale.
- Open-source contributions or major internal platform work that improved reliability, developer velocity, or operational maturity.
Why this Role
- Established product, real users, real impact, not a research project.
- Substantial ownership and influence as one of a small group of senior engineers.
- You’ll go deep on AI systems, prompting, and validation in a domain where getting it right actually matters.
- High-trust, supportive team that values craft and judgment over process.
Compensation
In accordance with the New York Pay Transparency Law (NY Labor Law §194-b) and the New York City Salary Transparency Law, the anticipated base salary range for this role is $190,000 – $240,000 per year, plus equity.
