The Medical Support Worker (MSW) is responsible for supporting the nursing staff in administering medical care to people supported with various medical needs at the Medical Support Units, Jerry Graesser Center (JGC) and in the community. The MSW functions as a member of the individual support planning team and provides the person with the support needed to assure as much independence as possible. The MSW will encourage and provide opportunities for persons in service to make decisions and to participate in the community. The MSW is also responsible for assisting in training new employees and for transporting people to appointments and events in the community. Work assignments are varied and include daytime, evening, overnight, weekend shifts, and holidays. Essential job functions include reporting to work as scheduled, providing services on a flexible basis including various hours and days, adhering to agency’s core values, maintaining confidentiality, assessing strengths/needs of persons served, communicating medical concerns, recognizing emergencies, administering medication, submitting paperwork promptly, tending to daily living needs, ensuring upkeep of environments, attending to financial needs, promoting community access, attending meetings and training, and conducting duties professionally. Other duties include assisting nurses with admissions, transfers, treatments, and other assigned duties. Education and experience requirements include being at least 18 years old, having a high school diploma or GED, and preferably 2 years’ experience in human services. Essential skills include passing background checks, possessing a valid driver’s license, good communication skills, ability to multi-task, and physical ability to lift 70 pounds and perform various physical activities. Driver responsibilities include assisting individuals boarding/exiting vehicles, ensuring safety and proper securing of passengers, maintaining van safety and cleanliness, transporting passengers safely, and performing daily vehicle safety checks.
